Unlike broadcast television Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors via hardwired cable and or wirelessly. These images are either viewed live or recorded to be viewed later when following up an incident. Some systems are viewed externally by a remote monitoring company and footage can even be sent to your smart phone.

Most organisations deploy CCTV to protect property though it soon becomes apparent that it can be a valuable tool, particularly with school CCTV systems, in pupil and staff management especially when integrated with automatic gates, door entry and access control.
